This old gal…
Was given a book…53 years ago…by a doctor…who most likely…saved her life…seven year old me and those brothers of hers…had their tonsils out…the next day…little me complained of stomach pains…getting sicker and sicker by the hour… Doctor made a house call…sent sick little me to the hospital…appendix was flaring up…but could not be removed…due to the recent…tonsillectomy…three days…sick little me…lie in intensive care…the angry appendix rupturing…still having to wait for surgery…the prognosis…was not good… Those seven year old memories…are as clear as if it were yesterday…but it’s not the fear…or the pain…that dominates the memory…it’s the kindness…of everyone…absolutely everyone…doctors…nurses…family…friends…other patients…relatives of other patients… Holding a tiny little hand…saying kind words…keeping scared little me…strong…and brave…this little book…a beautiful treasure…reminding this old gal…she’s lucky to be here…thankful for that doctor…bringing the book to that hospital bedside…telling sick little me he’s so proud of her…for being so brave… A book called…Little Girls…so aptly named…because if it hadn’t been for him…and those amazing medical people of his…this old gal…would never have had… Her precious…little girls… And those daughters of mine…agree…
