This old gal…
Was at the Y…working on those flappy triceps using some newfangled weight machine…couldn’t help but become aware…of a boisterous gentleman nearby…he was perky…loud…greeting people between sets like…hey Jane…missed you at Bingo the other night…hey Fred…how was your trip out East…seemed to know lots of people…seemed to have lots of friends… And then came the conversation…that made bat winged arm me take pause… Him…hey Jim…how’s your sister… Jim…I don’t know…why… Him…she had a heart attack…Friday night…at the football game… Jim…oh…I didn’t know…I don’t ever talk to her… Him…oh yea…my buddy works for the fire department and they got called…she’d collapsed there at the stadium… Jim…are you sure it was my sister… Him…yea…how old is she… Jim…54… Him…yea…it was her… Jim…how is she… Him…I don’t know…that’s why I’m asking you… And there it was…that little ache of knowledge…that time…has put distance…between this old gal…and some of her very important people…in her head…and in her heart…the closeness is still there…but in reality…in the heart attack at the football game reality…she…would not get a call… And so…like those flabby old triceps…she needs to work on that…reach out…close the gap…let those loved ones know…how so very important…they still are… And this husband of mine…agrees…
