This old gal…
Has been quite the Texas driver this winter…zipping here…zipping there…in town…out of town…many many miles from town…and funny thing…the panic is gone… Or mostly gone…that drive into San Antonio always gonna be a nail biter…but for the most part…the crippling panic…the I-don’t-want-to-go-anywhere-except-a-few-blocks-from-here panic…has flown the coop… Not sure why…maybe that co-pilot of mine no longer points out every driving infraction he observes from his comfy seat to the right…or maybe driver me now knows his triggers and follows the rules of the road… Or maybe…she just doesn’t care any more… Gonna tailgate driver me going 70 in a 70 because you want to go 90?..sorry not sorry…gonna turn left on a red and merge before the old gal across from you can turn right?..go ahead…make my day… Ot maybe…just maybe…this home away from home…this five years now winter home away from home…feels like a community…her community… That waitress before you order saying two salads no bacon…the Golden Corral server giving hugs so happy to see her regulars…and Bubba at the store where we stop to get ice shouting out, “It’s been a hot minute!! Where the heck have you been?”… Actually it’s been eight months…and we’ve been in Iowa… A community…where people know you…where people call you friend… A community…where streets are familiar…buildings are familiar…you know the backroads to get where you’re going so you can avoid traffic or the pesky not-for-old-ladies round-a-bout… A community you know…a community you trust…a community where you feel safe… And isn’t that what we all want?..to feel safe…for our people to feel safe… Of course it is… And this husband of mine…agrees…
