That daughter of mine…
Has OCD…obsessive compulsive disorder…was diagnosed in second grade…but the signs were there…long before… OCD…characterizes itself…by unreasonable thoughts and fears…that result…in compulsive…behaviors… Noticed these fears…as early as four years old…fears of swallowing poison…setting off store beepers…accidentally…shoplifting… Fears morphing and changing…fears of getting sick…fears of breaking rules…fears…of making…mistakes… We all have these…now and then…but this…is fear and worry…on replay…on steroids… Compulsions…that stereotype of hand washing being one…could be asking and asking and asking for reassurance…to writing and rewriting and rewriting until homework…feels…right… And so…we celebrate those girls of mine…walking in the newly formed OCD Walk…in hopes of making connections…in hopes of creating awareness… For no one…is an island…alone in their health journey…embrace your gift and curse…learn from others…share what you know…and battle that battle…as a team… And those daughters of mine…agree…
