This old gal...
Got a little cocky, a little over-confident, a little too big for her britches. That casserole—called Casserole—a hit with that man of hers. Thought she'd push the envelope a bit. Whip up another one of her favorites. One he'd never tried before. One she's sure will get the thumb's-up. But she was wrong... Was craving a dish called Hamburger and Noodles—because that's pretty much what it is—just hamburger and noodles and tomato juice. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Sat down at the table, bowls in front of us, spoons in hand, and not five minutes in, the questioning began. The conversation going something like this... Him: "Do you taste something sour? I taste something sour." Her: "Is it the tomato juice?" Him: "No. It's not the tomato juice." Her: "Well, the only other things in it are noodles, salt, and pepper so I don't know what it would be." Him: "I think it's the hamburger. I think the hamburger is sour." Her: "I bought it fresh yesterday at Hy-Vee. It wasn't sticky or brown or anything when I fried it." Him: "Well, if we get sick in a few hours, we'll know it was bad." And just like that poor Hamburger and Noodles had a target on its back. Was being snubbed. Was obviously not going to make it into the Cool Casserole Club because one person thought it didn't measure up—even though the other person thought it was fine. Thought it was more than fine. And so it is...in life...that thing called peer pressure. Others dictating who you can like. Who to be kind to. Who to let into the cool kids' club. Trust your gut. Follow your heart. Stand up for good. And if the "hamburger" is bad...you'll know it soon enough. And this husband of mine agrees...
