This grandmother of mine…
Died of cancer…voice box cancer…had stopped to see her one day…she expressing concern about a lump on her neck…was told that mother of mine…chastised her for her concern…telling her to ignore it…that it was nothing… I think you should see the doctor…young me said…don’t worry about what mom says…and so she did…remember the diagnosis well…cuz this mother of mine…made it…all about herself…Gram in the hospital…cancer confirmed…her daughter…freaking out…running through the halls…wailing…ending up on one of those glass framed street overpasses…hands and face pressed to the glass…giving a show…for the drivers below… Orderlies took her away…on a stretcher…hospitalizing her as well…younger me watching…from the side…reaffirming a phrase…echoing in family memories…there was nothing so bad…that this woman…couldn’t make worse…her concern understandable…but this time…after all these years…it needed to be…about that dear sweet grandmother of mine… And so it is in life…those people…the solid foundation…the quiet strength…choosing to stay in the background…never taking the stage…front and center…need noticed…lifted up…celebrated…so look around…while there’s still time…find those people…make sure they know…how important they are…how special they are…how much…they are loved… And that husband of mine…agrees…
