This old gal…
Made a list and checked it twice…packed up the car all tidy and nice…takes a couple of weeks to be honest…not the actual packing…but the planning… That husband of mine…not so much…throws his stuff in a bag the day before…takes about an hour…one suitcase and a sack of hats… Doesn’t need much…wears the same thing regardless of weather…jeans…shirt…flannel…maybe a heavy coat…maybe not… Old gal me brings clothes for each season…for that’s what you get down there during the winter months…a month of humid…a month of cold…a month of spring…a month of hot… Sweaty Betty me wants to be comfortable…but packing me knows she will hear the words…the expected words…from that traveling partner of hers… Don’t pack too much…pack light…bring only what you need…and packing me is suddenly Steve Martin in that scene in “The Jerk”…the I don’t need anything…except this lamp scene… And she doesn’t need anything…except her cross stitch…and puzzles…books and color books…Christmas stuff…Christmas gifts…her pretty little Christmas tree… The coffee maker…fry pan…soft sheets…pillows…mushroom throw…notecards…calendars…photos… Because home away from home wouldn’t feel like home…wouldn’t BE home…without that proverbial Steve Martin lamp… And so it is…in life…home is where the heart is…but it’s also where your stuff is too…just a little bit of stuff…like a few totes worth of stuff…that’s all…Texas me doesn’t need anything else… And that husband of mine…agrees…
