One of us...
Has a birthday today! Another year around the sun. Another year of grand adventures. Another year celebrating his awesomeness. Gift-giver me on the search for a surprise—a birthday surprise. But the birthday boy is kind of hard to shop for. Says he doesn't need anything. Says he doesn't want anything. And sadly, shopping me gets stumped trying to come up with something—anything. Clothes? Too picky—or should we say selective. Doodads? Those more of an impulse buy and Goodwill thing. It's not that he doesn't appreciate gifts. He does. Oohing and ahhhing as he opens them. Using them. Displaying them. But the perfect gift was not to be found, until... Father's Day. A little surprise from that furry cat-son of ours. Found at Dollar General. Cost 5 bucks. And it was a hit. A hit-it-out-of-the-ballpark hit. A home run in the world of gift giving. Spent an hour putting it together. Yes, an hour. Lego-doers us out of practice when it comes to doing Legos. And it was fun. Laughing. Working together. Reading directions. Clicking those little plastic pieces together creating that creation. And that's when it hit. A different kind of hit. The revelation. The Aha. The answer to the gift giving treasure hunt. Joy lies in the little things. The simple things. A text from a friend, a call from family, a donut from Casey's, fried chicken that tastes like it did in the 1960's. A winter day in Texas, a coffee from Buc-ee's, watching the sun come up while that favorite cat of yours plays in the yard. And so, Happy Birthday, dear husband of mine. May your special day, and the year to come, be filled with gifts. Gifts that make you smile. Gifts that warm your heart. Gifts that let you know that you are loved...because feeling loved... Is the greatest gift of all... And Pumpkin...agrees...
