This old gal…
Baked cinnamon rolls…not the kind she baked years ago…real…homemade…flour, yeast, knead, raise…but the fake rolls…real but fake…the kind those daughters of hers grew up on… And loved…always a weekend thing…made Pillsbury cinnamon rolls for breakfast, or a bedtime snack…especially a favorite of the baby of the family… Hadn’t made them since she visited…she stopping to say good-bye on her way to DC…one last cinnamon roll breakfast before moving to the other side of the country… Thought of her while unwrapping the tube…gonna take a picture…send it her way…but something was different this time in the cinnamon roll prep… That tube…that pop that cardboard with a spoon tube…wouldn’t pop…no matter what…spoon, knife, the long-ago-before-someone-must-have-been-injured rap it on the edge of the counter way… It was hard…more difficult than it should be…and thought of that daughter of mine again…seeing the parallel… That move of hers…new life…new job…new school…has been kind of like this tube…has not been without challenges… But this mama of hers sees that youngest DC gal…teacher extraordinaire…peeling back the layers…using that proverbial spoon edge…to find the good that she deserves… And so it is…in life…change is hard…but anything worth having…is worth the effort it takes…to get there… And this daughter of mine…agrees…
